The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for today with thunderstorms set to hit Northern Ireland.

According to the weather service, the warning will come into force from 11am today and will expire at 8pm tonight.

Heavy showers and a few thunderstorms may cause some disruption, particularly to travel.

Betwen 30mm and 40mm of rain could fall over the course of a few hours, the Met Office said.

The forecaster said on their website: “There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

“Delays to train services are possible.”

Flooding of a few homes and businesses is also possible, potentially leading to some damage to buildings or structures, said the forecaster.

Brits have also been warned by the Met Office that damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes with short-term loss of power and other services could happen.

The Met Office has said for the weekend: “[It will be] dry and bright on Friday but very warm and humid with showers or heavy rain developing overnight into Saturday.

“Cooler by Sunday, but remaining unsettled with further showers.”

While Friday may still offer warm sunshine to the southeast of England, much of the north and west should brace for cloudier skies and intermittent showers, said the Met Office.

Another yellow thunderstorm warning will come into force tomorrow at 12 noon.

It will expire at 8pm on Friday.

And unsettled weather is forecast to spread across more of the UK over the weekend, as temperatures start to slowly drop.

On Saturday, the weather is forecasted to deteriorate across most of the country as the rain sets in.

The Met Office said that the weather for Saturday to Monday may see “outbreaks of showery rain” in some regions.

Metereologists said the conditions would be “turning cooler this weekend with widespread thundery showers”.

A yellow thunderstorm warning covering large swathes of the country including London, Birmingham and Manchester will be put in place at 9pm on Friday.

The warning will expire at 6pm on Saturday July 19.

Forecasters suggested that the early part of next week will see further episodes of heavy rain and potential thunderstorms.

It comes as the UK transitions into a more Atlantic-driven weather pattern, according to the forecaster.

This shift will result in breezy conditions and repeated bouts of rain, although there will still be occasional periods of sunshine, said the Met Office.

The Met Office’s 3-day forecast for Saturday July 19 to Monday July 21 warns: “Staying cloudy further north and west with outbreaks of showery rain.

“Turning cooler this weekend with widespread thundery showers. Remaining unsettled into the new week.”
