More than 10cm of snow could fall on high ground in the warning zone.
Forecasters said the snow will likely cause road, bus and train delays across Scotland.
ScotRail said that it has brought in speed restrictions between Glasgow and Edinburgh and could cancel some services.
Some lines are blocked between Reading and Paddington after a freight train was derailed.
Train running between the two stations will be cancelled or delayed, GWR said.
A yellow rain warning will also cover central and south west Scotland until 9am.
More than 35mm of rain is expected to fall in some parts of the Central Belt overnight.
Homes and businesses could be flooded – and surface water will probably spark more delays on the roads.
It comes as Brits are bracing for 70mph winds as Storm Kathleen rolls in from the Atlantic.
Met Office expert Greg Dewhurst said roaring wind will buffet the west coast over the weekend.
A yellow wind warning will cover Northern Ireland and the whole west coast from Cornwall up to Scotland throughout tomorrow.
There could be travel delays, road closures, power cuts, phone signal outages and life-threatening debris in the warning zone.
Mr Dewhurst said: “Winds pick up further through Friday evening, overnight into Saturday.
“As we start Saturday morning we’ll see widely across the country gusts of 30-40mph.
“In western parts of the UK, inland, we could see gusts of 40 to 50mph.
“Then around the western coast of the UK we could see gusts of sort of 60-70mph.”
Named by the Irish Met Office, Storm Kathleen is the 11th named storm in eight months.
It is only the second time in a UK storm season that the letter K has been reached in the alphabet.
