A VIDEO games room that looks like a seaside amusement arcade has been created for young lags.

The colourful play area includes a selection of high-tech driving games.

Arcade style video games have been installed at HMP Werrington young offender institution in Staffs

A photo of the “Gold Arcade Room” emerged this week in a report by Charlie Taylor, the Chief Inspector of Prisons.

The games have been installed at HMP Werrington young offender institution in Staffs.

They are only available to lags on the gold level of their incentives scheme.

The report said it was a “welcome space” for around 25 inmates.

Previously, just one arcade machine was available, but in the past year a range of free-to-play games — mostly driving or biking — have been brought in.

Other activities include a basketball machine, table football, air hockey and table tennis.

But a retired prison worker said: “I think victims will be shocked. I’m not sure they will look kindly on people who have harmed them being allowed to play arcade machines all day.”

A Youth Custody Service spokesman said lags at the jail had “access to activities to support their rehabilitation”.
