FRUIT flies have invaded UK households despite the temperatures dropping.
The pesky pests are a common sight during warmer months but many Brits have discovered them taking over their kitchens in autumn.
Fruit flies are drawn to the smell of ripe produce
Fruit flies can quickly become an annoyance as they reproduce at an astonishing rate.
As they’re small, they can sneak into your house through gaps in the window and cause an infestation.
These winged insects are attracted to fermenting food products, as well as fermented goods like beer, liquor and wine.
They are hardwired to follow the smell of ripe produce and can detect them from great distances.
Dr Luke Tilley, Entomologist and Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, told DailyMail: “Fruit flies are attracted to warm, humid conditions, particularly around drains, sinks and kitchens.
“They lay their eggs in moist, organic material, which is why compost caddies and fruit bowls are common hotspots.”
You’ll likely find a hungry fruit fly buzzing around in your kitchen where decomposing fruits are laying around.
If you find your house overwhelmed with fruit flies, don’t panic – there is a simple and cheap way to get rid of them.
You can set up an easy, homemade trap to deter the pesky pests from entering your space.
All you need is a 35p buy that can be found in every kitchen.
First up, pick up a washing up liquid for as low as £35 from a bargain store like Morrisons.
Get a small dish and generously fill it with the washing up liquid.
Next, add a layer of apple cider vinegar, and don’t be put off by the smell.
Leave your DIY trap in the kitchen for a day or two, and wait for the magic to happen.
Flies should flock to the solution as they are drawn to vinegar, and will perish in the trap.
