LAURENT MEKIES has been promoted to Red Bull Racing Team Principal replacing Christian Horner who was sacked.

The Frenchman will become CEO of Red Bull Racing with immediate effect after Horner was shockingly sacked on July 9.

Who is Laurent Mekies?

Born in Tours, France on 28 April, 1977, Mekies had a strong educational upbringing.

He graduated from the École supérieure des techniques aéronautiques et de construction automobile in Paris with a mechanical engineering degree.

Shortly after the Frenchman obtained a master’s degree from Loughborough University.

What is Mekies’ F1 history?

Mekies is vastly experienced in F1 previously working for Ferrari and the FIAGetty – Contributor

Mekies was the engineer of Racing Bulls having taken over at the helm at the start of the 2024 season.

He previously worked as a race director at Ferrari until 2023 when he left to join Red Bull.

The 48-year-old also worked as a safety director for the FIA before securing his dream move to Ferrari in 2018.

Mekies started his tenured F1 career with Arrows in 2001 where he worked as race engineer.

He then moved to Minardi in 2002 which was then taken over by Red Bull and renamed Toro Rosso.

After 12 successful years with Toro Rosso he left to join the FIA.

What has Mekies said about the move?

Red Bull Racing announced that Christian Horner had been sacked as team principal on July 9, 2025.

In a statement they said: ““Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today (Wednesday 9 July 2025) and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing.

Mekies commented: “The last year and a half has been an absolute privilege to lead the team with Peter [Bayer, Racing Bulls CEO].

“It has been an amazing adventure to contribute to the birth of Racing Bulls together with all our talented people.

“The spirit of the whole team is incredible, and I strongly believe that this is just the beginning.”

As Mekies makes the move to Red Bull, current Racing Bulls Racing Director Alan Permane will be promoted to Team Principal at the sister outfit.

Mekies added: “Alan is the perfect man to take over now and continue our path.

“He knows the team inside out and has always been an important pillar of our early successes.”
