Woman, 40, arrested after ‘unexplained’ death of eight-year-old child as cops probe tragedy

A 40-year-old woman has been arrested following the tragic death of an eight-year-old child.

Cops received a call from North East Air Ambulance Service at 10am yesterday following the child’s death in Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees.

A 40-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the child’s death and she is currently being questioned.

Crime scene investigators were pictured at the property on Monday along with several police vehicles.

Officers were going door to door carrying out enquiries and a forensic officer in a white suit was spotted carrying brown evidence bags out of a property.

Police remain at the scene, where a police van is parked outside of the property.

A cordon is also in place with officers spotted in the back garden of the home which has blue and white police tape across the opening.

A force spokesperson said: “Update on police presence on Marsh House Avenue in Billingham.

“On Monday 15th September at 10am, officers received a call from the North East Air Ambulance Service regarding the sad passing of an eight-year-old child.

“The child’s death is currently being treated as unexplained and detectives have launched an investigation.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the child during this very difficult time.

“A 40-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the child’s death and she is currently being questioned.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
