Woman, 63, riding mobility scooter hit & killed by HGV while crossing road outside Lidl in Rochdale as driver arrested

A WOMAN has tragically died after she was hit by an HGV while riding a mobility scooter.

The 63-year-old was using a pedestrian crossing when the horror unfolded in Rochdale, Manchester today.

Police say they were called around midday after reports of the crash involving a lorry outside a Lidl.

Horrified onlookers said the woman’s death was just “awful”.

A man, 32, was arrested after the crash and remained in custody tonight.

Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers were called to reports that a HGV had collided with a woman who was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing point on Spotland Road, Rochdale, just before the junction with High Street.

“The emergency services attended but tragically a 63-year-old female pedestrian had sadly passed away.”

MEN reported the woman was riding a mobility scooter as she crossed the road.

The driver of the truck was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

Police Constable Philip Drummond of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Tragically a woman has died after the incident earlier today.

“My thoughts are with her family and friends at this devastating time.

“We’re already following up on a number of lines of enquiry and would urge anyone with information to come forward to assist us.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dash-cam or CCTV footage.

“The investigation is in the early stages so any information, no matter how big or small, could really help us piece together what happened.”
