Police have released a statement following the man’s arrestGetty

The horrifying incident occurred in the popular Heaton Mersey Park in Stockport.

According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the victim was approached by the man whilst he was holding a firearm.

After that, he forced her to go with him to the park where he raped her before fleeing on foot.

However, the 28-year-old was arrested just an hour after police were notified about the attack.

Now, cops are conducting enquiries in the local area and have ramped up patrols to reassure residents.

People with information about the attack have been urged to come forward, as the authorities investigate the man’s gun.

Superintendent Dave Henthorne said: “Fortunately in Greater Manchester, stranger rape is extremely uncommon, but when instances do occur, it’s right that we work quickly and robustly to mitigate any further harm.

“What this victim has been through is nothing short of terrifying, and we have specialist officers in place to support her, which is our focus. She has been incredibly brave in coming forward.

“I hope that this swift arrest reassures the community that there is not thought to be any wider risk, but our neighbourhood officers are in place to speak to anyone who is concerned.

“Anyone who has not yet spoken to us and may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact us immediately on 0161 856 9932 quoting log 3668 of 9 September 2025.”

The news comes after the Metropolitan Police force launched a probe into its staff’s behaviour.

The number of investigations into dodgy behaviour reported at the biggest force in Britain has doubled in the last two years.

From April 2024 to March 2025, there were 301 disciplinary hearings — up from 155 in 2022/23.

Data from the past three years revealed that “discreditable conduct” was the most common reason for hearings.

That led to 52 dismissals in the past year, which is an increase from 33 dismissals in 2023.

Also, dismissals for sexual assault have nearly doubled with 28 workers being sacked in 2024 compared to 17 in 2023.
