Woman ‘sexually assaulted’ on stairs of city centre bar as cops issue new picture in hunt for man

A WOMAN has been “sexually assaulted” on the stairs of a bar as cops desperately hunt for a man.

The attack happened at The Mushroom bar on Grainger Street in Northumbria at around 1am on March 23.

Cops said a man allegedly touched the woman without her consent after lifting up her skirt as she went up the bar’s stairs.

The victim was said to be left “shaken” by the assault.

Northumbria Police released a statement today urging anyone who may have some information to get in touch.

An image has been released of a man officers would like to question in connection with the incident.

The force said: “Do you recognise this man? We want to speak to him in connection with a report of sexual assault in Newcastle city centre.

“It was reported to have happened at around 1am on Sunday, March 23, inside of The Mushroom bar on Grainger Street.

“It’s understood a man had been walking behind a woman going upstairs, and has lifted up her dress and touched her without consent.

“The victim challenged the man, who was removed from the premises by staff, and she was left shaken by the incident.

“Extensive enquiries have been ongoing since the report was first made.

“The man pictured was believed to have been in the area at the time, and may be able to help us.
