The Dutchman set up one of the biggest matches of his career by beating James Wade in the second round, before spending some time away from the oche over Christmas.

But he suffered an accident while carving the ham for his dinner as he sliced his finger.

Wattimena went to hospital for the injury and was spotted on stage with a plaster over the wounded digit.

Sky Sports commentator Glen Durrant explained why Wattimena was patched up.

He said: “Jermaine Wattimena had a nightmare couple of days.

“While having Christmas dinner he cut his finger, on his non-throwing hand, when carving the ham and ended up going to the hospital.”

His opponent Wright also endured a rough few days leading up to the tie.

The 54-year-old was confined to his sofa as he suffered with illness and had to pause his throw to cough on more than one occasion.

But it did not let him affect his play as he returned to form nearer to his best, reminding fans of his talents after a misfiring year.

Wright achieved his highest average since winning the World Darts Championship in 2022 and never looked like losing – even when Wattimena pulled it back to 3-2.
