THE world’s oldest chippy has been revealed and it has shocked fish and chip fans across the country.

A takeaway called Man’s Wok Chip Shop, in Mossley, Greater Manchester, was crowned the oldest chip shop in Britain by the Sunday Express Magazine.

The battle for the oldest chippy has been a hot topic with many led to believe it started in London.

The takeaway shop has since changed its menu and now serves oriental dishes as well as the iconic dish.

However, Tameside Council now hope to erect a blue plaque on the greater Manchester shop to officially recognise its past.

More work needs to be done and “concrete evidence” is still needed before the council can support the nomination.

A council spokesperson added: “More research needs to be done before anything can happen.”

The Mossley shop had been selling fish and chips since 1863 and has continued selling the staple food to this day.

Its rival in London’s East End also holds claim to the first-ever chippy in the UK as they claim to have opened at the same time.

However, the store in London has since changed and no longer serves the iconic British meal.

Meanwhile, the chippy in Manchester can claim the title for the longest-lasting as they continue to fry our national dish.

There were around 10,500 fish and chip shops in the UK in 2020, according to Global Grooves.

Chinese takeaway is Britain’s second favourite fast food and has become an integral part of the food culture in the nation.

Yet, the modern appetite for takeaway food has changed with the increase in people ordering food through apps, leaving small independent retailers behind.
