The ram learned to use a brush by watching a pig called Pigcasso at their animal sanctuary in South Africa.

Joanne Lefson, who runs the farm in Franschhoek, in the winelands near Cape Town, said: “He was taken in the middle of the night from a flock of eight.

“I cannot believe it was random that Baansky, the only painting sheep in the world, was the only one taken.

“I have hired two top private investigators and have put up a £50,000 reward.”

Joanne, 53, said Baanksy had been kept in the same pen as the famed Pigcasso, before the sow died last year.

Pigcasso’s works raised £800,000 for Farm Sanctuary SA and were exhibited in cities including Cape Town, Munich and Amsterdam.

She sold 550 pictures to fans including actor George Clooney and held the record for the highest price paid for an animal painting — at £20,000.

Joanne said: “Pigcasso had passed on all her skills to Baanksy before she died and he has done 17 paintings which were getting better and better.”
