The flooding has left residents of Agrigento Town and the San Leone hamlet in Sicily unable to leave their homes.

Amid the chaos, a woman has been reported as missing, thought to have been swept away in flood water.

Authorities believe she disappeared on Wednesday after attempting to get out of her car, which was stuck due to the extreme weather.

Firefighters are continuing to search for her.

The woman has disappeared just after a German tourist died in flash flooding in Spigno Monferrato, in northern Italy.

Italy is not the only Mediterranean country being hit by wild spring weather.

Holidaymakers in Ibiza witnessed a rock slide crash down onto a hillside hotel, leaving three people injured.

The falling rocks caused hundreds of people to evacuate in order to avoid being crushed beneath the boulders.

In terrifying video of the avalanche, a  British tourist can be heard repeatedly yelling: “Oh my God, oh my God”, as the rocks smashed into the hotel complex.

Guests could be seen rushing out onto their balconies as the rocks crashed down.

The landslide hit as the holiday island suffered freak floods after Storm Gabrielle swept the Atlantic.

Four people were trapped as the rockfall hit at the Vibra Tropical Garden Apartments, which is just a short stroll from Figueretas beach near Ibiza Town.

Two of the three casualties suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, while the third was rushed to a nearby private hospital.

The fourth person was freed unharmed.

It was not clear this morning whether any Brits were among those injured.

Around 220 guests were evacuated overnight and moved to hotels in the nearby Playa d’en Bossa resort.
