Jones, 22, was initially booked for the tackle, which saw him plant his studs on Bissouma’s shin, but referee Simon Hooper upgraded it to a red after VAR Darren England recommended he take another look.

After their 2-1 defeat, Liverpool saw fit to appeal Jones’ sending off.

But their protest has been rejected and Jones will now be suspended for three matches.

Boss Jurgen Klopp will have to do without the homegrown star for upcoming games against Brighton, Everton and Nottingham Forest.

Sky Sports’ Gary Neville was unhappy with the red card decision during commentary.

The former Manchester United captain said: “No, no, no. I know when you’re doing someone, I’ve done it myself, he wasn’t there to do someone.

“They’re showing the end motion which looks bad.

“But that’s not how it’s ended up there, his foot just slipped off the ball.

“It’s not a red card but he’s going to get one and it’s going to ruin the game probably.”

On Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher added: “I have got no problem with it being a red card – I would have liked to have seen it not given, not because of my angle but I always think as a referee, can you keep it 11 vs 11 on the pitch.”

Forward Diogo Jota will also miss the trip to Brighton after he was sent off for two bookable offences against Spurs.

The Reds were left furious after Luis Diaz‘s first-half goal was incorrectly disallowed for offside.

VAR officials failed to intervene after the Colombian was initially flagged for offside, despite clearly being on.

England was subsequently axed from his next assignment following the mistake.

And the officials’ audio of the gaffe was released last night.
