Arsenal vs Olympiacos preview
Arsenal will be looking to extend their perfect start to the Champions League league phase when they welcome Olympiacos to the Emirates this week.
The Gunners opened their European campaign with a confident 2-0 win away at Athletic Bilbao and are strong favourites at 2/11 to secure another three points against the Greek side.
And it’s easy to see why.
Mikel Arteta’s side should be buoyed by Sunday’s dramatic late win over Newcastle at St James’ Park. Trailing by a goal, Arsenal fought back to level and then snatched a stoppage-time winner – a result that closed the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool.
That momentum could carry into Wednesday’s clash, especially given Arsenal have won each of their last five Champions League group-stage matches.
Home advantage should also play a role. The Gunners have won two of their three home games this season, scoring nine goals and conceding just once – to Manchester City.
Defensively, Arsenal have also been solid in Europe. Among teams to feature in the last two editions of the Champions League, they’ve conceded the fewest goals per game.
That said, there’s a long history between these two clubs. This will be the 13th meeting between Arsenal and Olympiacos in European competition, with neither side having the upper hand – each has won six times, and none of the previous 12 meetings have ended in a draw.
Olympiacos will believe they’re capable of another upset. They’ve won two of their last three away games against English opposition – including a memorable win at the Emirates in 2021.
Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side are unbeaten in seven league matches this season, winning five, and arrive in north London with confidence and form.
