The Oscar-winning actress died in California on Saturday, October 11, after emergency responders were dispatched to a “person down” call in the early hours of the morning, according to audio obtained by TMZ.

“Rescue 19, person down,” a dispatcher said before Keaton was transported to a local hospital by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The 79-year-old’s family later confirmed her death.

Keaton’s longtime friend, Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, told People she noticed something worrying when she last saw the star.

“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager said.

“She had lost so much weight.”

Sager explained that Keaton had spent several months in Palm Springs earlier this year after her Los Angeles home was damaged by the January wildfires.

“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” she said.

“When she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”

Despite the visible change, Sager remembered Keaton as full joy and creativity in their final meeting.

“She was a magic light for everyone,” she said. “I just loved her. She was so special—she just lit up a room with her energy.”

The pair had recently worked together on Keaton’s only solo single, First Christmas, released in November 2024.

“She so loved recording this song,” Sager recalled. “She was almost childlike about it. She was so authentic when she sang it.”

Sager described how Keaton became emotional in the studio.
