England U21 vs Germany U21 preview
Well, here we go. It’s the big one: England vs Germany for the European Under-21 Championship title at the Tehelne pole Stadium in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The Young Lions booked their place in a second successive U21 final under manager Lee Carsley with a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands at the same venue.
Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott was the hero, scoring twice to send England through to Saturday’s showdown – and to within 90 minutes of successfully defending their crown and securing a fourth European title.
After a sluggish group stage – which included a defeat to their upcoming opponents Germany and a frustrating goalless draw with Slovenia – Carsley’s side have since found their form.
They overcame Spain in the quarter-finals before putting in a composed, mature performance against the Dutch. With momentum on their side, England appear to be peaking at exactly the right time.
But this will be no picnic against a formidable Germany side.
The Germans produced a scintillating performance to sweep past France on Wednesday, and are now unbeaten in their last 20 matches across all competitions (W17, D3).
They’re also no strangers to the latter stages of this tournament, having reached the final in three of the last four European Under-21 Championships – winning twice.
Leading the charge is the competition’s top scorer, Nick Woltemade, who has now netted six goals and provided three assists in just four appearances.
Germany came out on top when these sides met in the group stage, winning 2–1 – and, worryingly for England, Woltemade didn’t even feature. The Germans made a full 11 changes for that clash with Lee Carsley’s side and still came away with the win.
That said, England did win the two previous meetings before that.

Nick Woltemade was my pick for the Golden Boot at 7/1 – and he’s delivered in style, notching six goals and three assists in just four appearances.
The 23-year-old forward enjoyed a standout season with Bundesliga side Stuttgart, scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions, and he’s clearly showing no signs of fatigue.
He’s also proving to be remarkably clinical, converting six of his seven shots on target in the tournament. Only Harvey Elliott and Mathys Tel have attempted more efforts on goal.
