He claimed the former British Army Officer had said negative things to the media about Ms Badenoch, sources told The Sun.

The showdown took place in the private MPs’ parliamentary lounge at their annual conference in Manchester on Tuesday.

Witnesses said it was “heated” and Mr Shelbrooke told Mr Obese-Jecty to “pack it in”.

It is understood veteran Mr Obese-Jecty denied the claims.

Approached by The Sun, Mr Shelbrooke said: “I called him out about it. He denied it.

“It was about things I had been told. Let it be a lesson to people who try to undermine a positive conference.

“Those who think they are being clever are completely out of step with the conference and the party.”

Mr Obese-Jecty was contacted for comment.

The row took place on the eve of Ms Badenoch’s keynote address to the party faithful.

Tory conference has been dogged by leadership speculation as the party struggles in the polls.

One YouGov survey showed that around half the membership think Ms Badenoch should not lead them into the next election.

And nearly two-thirds back an electoral pact with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.

Ms Badenoch told members she would not split the right and there was “no deal” to be done with Reform.

Her shadow cabinet launched a policy blitz at conference in a bid to woo back voters.

They include leaving the European Convention on Human Rights and slashing £47 billion in public spending.
