A STAGE adaptation of A Christmas Carol has been slapped with a woke trigger warning that it features ghosts — and themes of poverty.
Worried theatre bosses also feel the need to say the festive classic tackles “isolation, social responsibility, greed, and death.”
Content guidance about the Leeds Play House’s production reads: “A Christmas Carol is a ghost story and therefore contains depiction of ghosts.”
The section concludes that the story “may not be suitable for children under seven”.
But a baffled theatre fan said: “It’s strange to think that children and older audience members need to be warned about the themes of one of the world’s best-known and best-loved Christmas stories.”
The original novel, written by Charles Dickens in 1843, sees Ebenezer Scrooge haunted by both scary and jolly ghosts.
It explores Victorian social ills, though has a happy ending, with Scrooge learning to be kind instead of greedy.
It has been adapted countless times over the years.
The play in Leeds written by Deborah McAndrew, also known for playing Angie Freeman in Coronation Street in the 1990s.
Performances of the play start in November and end in January.
