Locals reported fighting in the street just moments before the crash.

A large cordon is currently in place and the road is closed in both directions while an investigation continues.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “South Wales Police was called just before 12.30am this morning, Saturday, September 27, with a report that the driver of a car had collided with several pedestrians on Heol Trelai in Caerau area of Cardiff.

“Currently, we believe that three people were struck by the car, with one person suffering serious injuries that may be life-changing.

“To ensure a thorough investigation, a large cordon is in place around the area with the road currently being closed in both directions between Caerau Lane and Church Road.

“We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to gather more information and progress with our inquiries.”

A witness told WalesOnline: “It happened on the grass verge in the middle of the carriageway directly outside the Homeguard.

“It was the usual sight – people fighting.

“Then a car comes up and ploughs into some of them. I saw it from my bedroom window.”
