HUMAN bones have been discovered on a popular UK holiday beach with cops launching an urgent investigation.

The grim discovery was made on Saunton Sands beach in North Devon on Saturday afternoon.

Police raced to the scene and the beach was cordoned off as a probe into the find was launched.

The bones will be examined by a forensic archaeologist to assess how old they are.

Pictures from the scene, taken by a horrified member of the public, show officers digging in the sand.

An area of the beach near a sauna was completely taped off with police seemingly focusing their search around the small building.

All of the human remains were recovered from the beach and have been transported away.

Officers continued their investigation into the night as they swept the area around the sauna for clues.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Officers were called at 2.50pm on Saturday 11 October following the discovery of human bones at Saunton Sands beach.

“A scene guard remains in place while the items are recovered.

“These will be examined by a forensic archaeologist to determine their age. Police enquiries are ongoing.”

It is the latest discovery of human bones on beaches in the area.

In May Devon and Cornwall police said what appeared to be human remains were found at the end of Westward Ho! beach in Bideford, North Devon.

And, later that same day, further remains were found on the coastline at nearby Appledore.

In May the force said that they had not identified the two sets of bones, adding that they couldn’t be certain if they related to the same person.

Officers said in the event of any further discoveries to contact 999 but sought to reassure the local community they were not at any risk.
