If that didn’t work, would you wait until the lunatic had smashed his way into your home before trying to take his weapon?
Or might you think it a good idea to take action before his axe was poised above your head? Of course. You’d be crazy not to — or already dead.
This is why Israel decided a week ago to launch a massive pre-emptive missile strike on Iran’s nuclear and military sites.
Operation Rising Lion was an act of national self-defence in the face of an existential threat to Israel’s existence, which targeted what Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu called “the heart” of Iran’s nuclear weapons programme.
The Iranian regime has spent decades, and billions of dollars, trying to build a nuclear bomb while happily funding every terror group in the Middle East and telling the world again and again that they plan to annihilate Israel.
You do not have to be the new head of MI6 to decipher that coded message.
So what was Israel supposed to do? Continue to put up with the deadly attacks by Iranian proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah, while waiting for Iranian nuclear bombs to rain down on Tel Aviv?
You cannot negotiate with Islamic jihadists, just as you cannot reason with axe-wielding madmen.

To sit down and talk with the mad mullahs who preach “Death to Israel” every week at Friday prayers? That is as preposterous an idea as the claims that Israel’s attack on Iran is a breach of international law.
It is also as ludicrous as the argument that America and the rest of the western world should not back Israel to the hilt in their battle to survive as the only democracy in the Middle East.
While US President Donald Trump has been steadfast in support for Israel’s right to self-defence — although no decision has yet been taken over joining in the military assault on Iran — our own government, led by PM Sir Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy, has wavered in a bid to appease left-wing supporters and human-rights lawyers.
Instead of standing four-square behind our ally, our PM has wimpered about “de-escalation” and is dithering over whether or not to allow US forces to use the Diego Garcia military base if they do decide to attack.
By the time you read this, Trump may already have ordered his B-2 Spirit stealth bombers to deliver bunker-busting bombs to destroy Iran’s Fordow nuc- lear site deep underneath the ground.
Meanwhile in Britain, Attorney General Lord Her- mer has reportedly advised Sir Keir Starmer that any UK engagement in attacks on Iran could be illegal.
This is madness. Iran is not just a threat to Israel, the mad mullahs running that country are a threat to western civilisation itself. They don’t just shout “Death to Israel!”, they shout “Death to America!” and “Death to Britain!” too.
We, whether we like it or not, are next on their list.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz nailed it when he said Israel was doing the “dirty work . . . for all of us”, and added that he had the “utmost respect” for them for taking action against a regime which “has brought death and destruction to the world”. If only our own PM had the guts to be so forthright.
The reality is that the Israeli Defence Force — and Israeli civilians forced to hide in bomb shelters — are fighting on the front line against an Islamic death cult.
Terror apologists
If they fail in that fight, the “Great Satan” and “Little Satan” will be next in the firing line. That’s America and Britain, in case you were wondering.
The terror apologists who claim Israel’s attack on Iran is an unjustified act of war must explain to the rest of us precisely when would it be acceptable for Israel to take out Iran’s nuclear threat.
Do they have to wait until Iran have built their nuclear bombs, or can they act only after that bomb is loaded on to a missile? Maybe they should wait until it is in the sky above Jerusalem or Tel Aviv?

As the late, great American poet Maya Angelou said: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
Well, the Iranian regime has shown us who they are, time and time again.
With every dollar sent to Hezbollah and Hamas, with every attack on western military bases, with every terror plot on our own home soil, with every statement of intent to destroy Israel, America, Britain and the West.
They said they wanted to bring death to us. We should take them at their word.
TODAY, MPs will be asked to vote on the Assisted Dying Bill.
I have long supported the right to choose your own death as a matter of principle, but today I strongly urge every MP to vote against what is, in practice, the Death Bill. Labour MP Kim Leadbeater’s Bill, to allow some terminally ill people to end their lives with the help of a doctor, is a badly thought through and dangerous law.
Almost every safeguard we were told would be in the Bill, such as judges needing to approve every case, has been dropped – while many medical bodies, including royal colleges, have said they want nothing to do with it.
It could be the beginning of a slippery slope into a dark place where vulnerable people can be persuaded and coerced into taking their own lives. That isn’t about dignity in death, it could be an ugly reckoning with reality that the rest of us will live to regret.
A VICTORY FOR FREE SPEECH
BUCKLE up, woke students, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
As school exams finally come to an end, I’m already looking forward to the new university term starting this autumn.
That’s thanks to a new law which will require universities to promote and protect freedom of speech.
You might wonder why such a law is needed in Britain.
But, after years of academics and students being hounded off campus just for voicing opinions or even stating biological facts, it couldn’t come soon enough.
For too long, our students have been told they have a right to report every so-called “micro-aggression” in whatever anyone says, and to view every non-woke opinion as hate speech. Sometimes it’s even hard for them to keep up with the latest speech rules.
After all, only last weekend it was “far right” and “racist” to call for a national inquiry into Pakistani grooming gangs, yet now it’s Labour government policy.
From now on, though, as long as the law isn’t being broken, woke university chiefs cannot shut down debate or ban speakers.
All those fragile under-graduates will have to learn that if they are troubled by hearing alternative points of view, then maybe university just isn’t for them.
