KAMALA Harris has officially secured the Democratic presidential nomination weeks after President Joe Biden stepped down from the race.
The DNC chair announced on Friday that Harris has secured enough delegate votes to make the nomination – meaning she’ll officially be up against Republican nominee Donald Trump come November.

Though the online voting process is ongoing until Monday, August 5, Harris’ campaign announced the moment when she crossed the threshold to have the majority of delegates vote.
“I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris said on a virtual call with supporters.
“I will officially accept your nomination next week, once the virtual voting period is closed.”
DNC Chair Jaime Harrison said the party will “rally” around Harris during the party’s convention in Chicago later this month.
Harris’s nomination makes her the first woman of color at the top of a major party’s ticket.
Democrats have gone ahead with a virtual vote for Harris’s nomination.
On Thursday, August 1, delegates to the Democratic National Convention began voting through secure email.
Harris is yet to decide on a running mate and is expected to interview candidates over the August 3 weekend.
The formal nomination is anticipated to be finalized by August 7, though the party’s convention isn’t scheduled to start until August 19.
According to Democratic officials, the quickened timeline was necessary because of an August 7 deadline to make sure candidates get a spot on the Ohio ballot, per The Associated Press.
Soon after he dropped out of the race in July 2024, Biden endorsed Harris.
No other major candidate challenged the vice president for the nomination.
She was the only choice for delegates under party rules that required pledges of support from at least 300 delegates, with no more than 50 signatures from any one delegation, according to the outlet.
