THE bookies reckon it’s just 15-8 that Ascot’s huge British Champions Day card gets called off.

The track has been drenched by 24 millimetres of rain over the last few days – and there is more on the way.

AFPThe going at Ascot is currently described as soft[/caption]

It’s expected that Ascot chiefs will announce they are using the inner track – which is the hurdles track during the winter – for the races on the round course.

That is because the ground on the inner track is currently in much better condition than on the Flat course proper.

At present, the ground is described as Soft all over on the outer track, but Good, Good to Soft in places on the inner.

There is a protocol at Ascot for Champions Day that all races on the round course will be moved to the inner track if there is any ‘Heavy’ in the going description.

It is a pretty safe bet that will be the case, with heavy showers forecast for much of Friday.

However, the track can leave it as late as 7am on the day of racing to make their decision.

Bookies still reckon the meeting will get the green light, with the go ahead priced up at 2-5.

Clerk of the course Chris Stickels said: “We had nearly 13mm overnight on Wednesday into Thursday.

“We’re now soft on the outer course and the straight, and good, good to soft in places on the inner course.

“It looks like Saturday could just be a case of showers but between now and then we could get 16-20mm, which would prompt a switch to the inner course.

“We’re hoping to be able to decide midway through Friday but it is pretty likely we will end up using the inner track.”

The first race of six races on the £4 million card is the Long Distance Cup at 1.15.

And course bosses will be hoping wet weather doesn’t spoil Frankie Dettori’s farewell to British racing.
