Martinez appeared to injure his ankle as he challenged for the ball with Palace winger Ismaila Sarr.

As he stretched for the ball with his left foot his right caught the turf and appeared to get stuck slightly.

The Argentine was left in a heap on the ground and physios quickly rushed onto the pitch.

Martinez received lengthy treatment before being carried off on a stretcher.

It is not the first horror injury Martinez has incurred at Old Trafford.

He spent months on the treatment table in his first season at the club after breaking his metatarsal.

Soon after returning from that setback the defender picked up another freak injury after his knee bent awkwardly during a tussle with West Ham‘s Vladimir Coufal.

Matthijs de Ligt was brought on as Martinez’s replacement but United were undone on their left flank as Daniel Munoz burst through before squaring to Jean-Philippe Mateta to score.

That was the striker‘s second goal of the match as Palace sealed a 2-0 win.

The Red Devils have now failed to win in their four previous meetings with the south London club.

The injury blow comes at a bad time for United with time running out in the transfer window.

The club had been planning to bring in a forward ahead of tomorrow’s deadline, with Marcus Rashford nearing a move to Aston Villa.

Leon Bailey has been linked with a move in the opposite direction while Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, who rejected Tottenham this week, is another target.
