Liverpool and Atletico kick off their Champions League campaigns with matches both would likely wish to have avoided.

For Liverpool, they topped the league phase last year after a stellar campaign over the eight games and were rightly backed in to favourites to win the competition as a result.

But disappointment followed in the round-of-16 when, despite leading from the first leg in Paris, the Reds lost on penalties to eventual winners PSG.

He wasn’t involved on Sunday when Liverpool scraped beyond new boys Burnley thanks an injury time penalty but is expected to play some part here.

While that kept Liverpool’s 100% record in tact after four games, Atletico waited until their fourth game to finally bag their first win of the season.

A 2-0 win over Villarreal got them going in La Liga after a defeat on the opening day to Espanyol was followed by back-to-back 1-1 draws against Elche and Alaves.

They’ll be primed and ready to go for the trip the Merseyside and fancied to be set up to be hard to beat.

That’s trumped by Liverpool’s last two against title rivals Arsenal and new boys Burnley both being won 1-0.

Cody Gakpo appears to be in a fight for his place out on the left, with suggestions Huge Ekitike could play out there when Alexander Isak takes his spot.
