LUTON Airport has been left in chaos with planes stuck on runways and circling waiting to land after an air traffic control tower was evacuated.
Several passengers have taken to social media to complain that they are stuck on the tarmac.
Reports that an air traffic control tower had to be evacuated after a fire alarm.
Flight tracking apps show a number of planes left circling overhead while the issues on the ground are dealt with.
A queue of planes waiting to take off have been left on the runway with no air traffic controllers to guide them.
Passengers faced delays to their journeys as staff scrambled to get the airport operating again.
Luton Airport has confirmed the air traffic control tower was briefly closed.
The airport said flights faced minor holding delays as a result but that the tower has now been reopened.
Flights are now continuing to operate normally from the airport.
A Luton Airport spokesperson told The Sun: “Following a brief closure, the air traffic control tower is open again.
“Aside from minor holding delays, no diversions occurred during the closure and there was no impact on the operation.”
