A MAJOR motorway has been closed following a “serious” crash – with an air ambulance landing at the scene.

The M1 is shut northbound in the Midlands between junction 20 (Lutterworth) and junction 21 (Leicester).

Highways East Midlands confirmed the southbound route had re-opened at 3pm.

Earlier this afternoon an air ambulance landed at the scene, joining police, and fire crews.

National Highways reported at 12.50pm today: “The M1 in Leicestershire is CLOSED in both directions between J20 (Lutterworth) and J21 (M69, Leicester) due to a serious collision.

“All emergency services including an Air Ambulance are now on scene. Thanks for your patience if you’re caught up within the closure.”

An earlier post on X first confirmed news of the road closure at 12.20pm this afternoon.

A Highways spokesperson added: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

In the latest update, it added: “Traffic on the southbound carriageway has been released & all lanes have re-opened.

“Collision investigations are ongoing.”
