Major motorway shut down as police race to scene and drivers urged to seek different route

A MAJOR motorway has shut down with drivers being urged to seek out a different route.

Police raced to the stretch of road on the M6 to attend a “welfare incident” earlier this afternoon.

Traffic has been grounded to a halt on the M6 this afternoon following a major motorway shut down

The closure has been put in place between junction one and junction two near Rugby, Warwickshire.

The motorway is currently blocked northbound between the M1/A14 and junction J1, while the southbound lanes are also closed between J2 Coventry and J1 Rugby.

Frustrated motorists have been pictured out of their vehicles while waiting in the standstill traffic.

Warwickshire Police have confirmed that officers are currently at the scene.

National Highways Traffic Officers are also present, and assisting with traffic management, while diversions have been put in place.

Police have advised motorists to take an alternative route while they work to resolve the “welfare incident.”

A spokesperson said: “Officers are currently in attendance on the M6 near Rugby following a concern for welfare incident.

“A closure is in place between junctions 1 and 2 on both sides – motorists are advised to please take an alternative route.”

National Highways told Metro: “The M6 in Warwickshire is closed southbound between J2 (Coventry) and J1 (near Rugby) and also blocked northbound between the M1/A14 and J1 due to a Police-led incident.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic management.”
