Man City vs Man Utd preview

A very promising opening day for Manchester City and Manchester United, with hopes high early doors that this season would be significantly better than last year.

After three games, they sit 13th and 9th, respectively, and questions are already being asked of both sides.

City battered Wolves at Molineux on the opening day and looked to have set a real early benchmark with a terrific performance.

That’s turned out to be their only points of the campaign so far after being comfortably beaten 2-0 at home by Tottenham and then surrendering a lead to lose 2-1 to a late goal at Brighton.

Erling Haaland’s five-goal haul in Norway’s second qualifier showed he’s still bang at it, and now has 12 goals in his last eight competitive outings.

As for United, they’ve amassed four points with one win, one draw and one defeat in their three games.

Things looked good for them despite defeat to Arsenal on day one but that was followed by a draw at Fulham and that defeat to Grimsby in the cup.

And it’s hard to know what to make of the final game before the break, having surrendered the lead twice against Burnley before winning the game deep into injury time via a Bruno Fernandes penalty.

United are unbeaten in the last four derbies in all competitions though, including winning 2-1 on both of their last two visits here.

For all of City’s troubles at the start of the season, the big Norwegian isn’t one of them and he can deliver the goods again here against a United side yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Casemiro was booked in United’s only other away game of the season, when United dropped points at Fulham.

The midfielder has found himself back in the starting side for Ruben Amorim, while also picking up a yellow card in Brazil’s win over Chile – meaning he was suspended for their embarrassing defeat to Bolivia.
