A MAN wrongly convicted for murdering TV star Jill Dando has been charged with the historic rape of a teenage girl.

Barry George was jailed in 2001 over the Crimewatch presenter’s death before his conviction was quashed in 2007 and the following year he was acquitted at retrial.

The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed today it will prosecute the 65-year-old on charges of rape and two counts of indecent assault.

It added: “These relate to non-recent allegations that took place in 1987 against a woman who was a teenager at the time.”

George is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on October 29.

The CPS said: “We remind all concerned that proceedings against the suspect are active and he has a right to a fair trial.

“We recognise there is likely to be considerable interest in this case, however it is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in anyway prejudice these proceedings.”
