A statement from the club announcing the deal on Sunday said: “Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”

Selling side Wolves also confirmed the transfer in a statement of their own, saying: “Matheus Cunha has completed a permanent move to Manchester United for a club record fee following two-and-a-half years at Molineux…

“Everyone at Wolves would like to thank Matheus for his contributions in old gold and wish he and his family the best of luck for the future.”

Cunha, 26, is delighted to have moved to Old Trafford and is champing at the bit to get started.

He was spotted at the Lowry hotel in Manchester hours before the deal was announced.

The Brazil international was Wolves’ star man last season, scoring 17 goals and racking up six assists in 36 appearances.

The Premier League saw 15 of those goals, while United finished in an embarrassing 15th place.

United will pay Cunha’s release clause in three instalments over the next two years.

The club had hoped to pay yearly instalments until 2029, but their initial proposal was rejected by Molineux chiefs.

His arrival is the first of a make-or-break transfer window for Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese gaffer is plotting a major overhaul of his squad in the coming months.

There will be several outgoings at Old Trafford this summer to fill the financial blackhole left by the club’s failure to qualify for Europe.

Several big names will be up for sale, including skipper Bruno Fernandes and youngster Alejandro Garnacho.
