The Red Devils shared a post of the 38-year-old on their social media pages.
However, with Man Utd facing off with Luton in the Premier League, fans suggested he would not leave with a happy smile due to a defeat for his old team.
One fan said: “Bro will be depressed after seeing them play today.”
A second said: “Come to see United get smoked by Luton I see.”
Other fans recalled the guard of honour he was a part of when Man Utd had already won the league and turned up to Stamford Bridge.
One shared a picture of it and wrote: “Never forget this iconic guard of honour…”
A second said: “The guy that gave a collective shock to the entire world when he was named in the starting XI vs Chelsea.”
While a third recalled: “Oh my god I remember this guy! One of the most random United players ever.”
Dong had signed for the Red Devils from Chinese club Dalian Shide for an initial fee of £500,000, which could have risen to £3.5million depending on appearances.
However, having failed to score a goal during his time at the club, Dalian Shide reportedly agreed to refund Man Utd all the money they had spent on him.
He went on to feature on a Chinese reality TV show undergoing plastic surgery.
