But it appears there are some funds left in the coffers with Ruben Amorim keen to add to his defence.
United signed defenders Lenny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui last summer but are now said to be keen on Upamecano.
He is on the club’s transfer list of priorities, according to transfer insider Christian Falk.
Upamecano’s contract expires next season and Bayern Munich are pushing for him to sign a new deal.
So far they have not been able to reach an agreement and there has been little progress in talks.
Falk reports United’s interest is making negotiations more difficult, while his agent has also offered the defender to other Premier League clubs.
United also remain interested in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
They have seen an opening player-plus-cash offer rejected by the Seagulls.
