MILLIONAIRE amateur jockey David Maxwell has been forced to retire with immediate effect.

And he will sell all 16 of his horses – including an ‘impressive’ Cheltenham runner – in a special dispersal sale in October, report the Telegraph.

Maxwell has been told to end his racing career by doctors after breaking his back for a fourth time.

He rode all the horses he owned and memorably finished sixth in the 2024 Grand National on 40-1 Ain’t That A Shame.

That landed the hugely successful property developer a cheque for £30,000 and showed he truly can cut it with the pros.

But it was a fall at Aintree last season that proved the final blow.

Maxwell said: “It wasn’t the worst fracture I’ve had but it’s cumulative.

“How many impacts can you take? And at 47, I just don’t heal as well as I used to.”
