Bryan Smith, 47, from Easton, is said to have fled at speeds of 70mph, gone the wrong way around a roundabout and mounted pavements during his desperate bid to escape the pursuing officers.

The chase finally came to an end in Fishponds, Bristol, after Smith crashed his car.

Video footage of the arrest was captured by shocked bystanders from the window of their Renault Megane, which Smith appears to have smashed into.

Officers swarm around the stolen Volkswagen Sirocco with one cop using his baton to smash Smith’s window.

Another officer can be seen climbing over the bonnet and windshield of the bystander’s Renault in an attempt to get closer to the suspect.

A policeman then fires his taser through the broken window of the fleeing suspect’s car, striking the driver.

The passenger and driver of the Renault Megane watch on in shock as the dramatic arrest brings the high octane chase to a close.

The bystanders in the Renault climb out of their motor saying: “We’re witnesses, we’ll come out shall we?”

Officers ask if the pair are okay as the dramatic arrest continues in the background with more police arriving and attempting to drag smith out of his vehicle.

Video shows the stolen Sirocco stopped dead in the road after seemingly becoming wedged between the smashed up Renault and another car.

Bryan Smith appears to still be in the drivers seat of the stolen car with officers at his window attempting to handcuff him and haul him out.

A police chopper circles overhead after pursuing Smith during the chase.

The fleeing driver was taken into custody and appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court yesterday, September 4.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and a slew of other driving offences including failing to provide a specimen for analysis, driving without insurance and driving while disqualified.

He is due to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on October 9.

A second man and a woman, both also in their 40s, were arrested at the scene, they were released on conditional police bail as enquiries continue.

Brian Smith was first clocked by an officer on the other side of Bristol for having false plates.

He failed to stop and a police helicopter was called in to assist in the ensuing high speed chase.

The court heard that he had unknowingly bought the stolen Volkswagen just days before the chase unfolded.

Smith has not been granted bail and will be remanded in custody.

The Sun has contacted Avon and Somerset Police for comment.
