VANDALS smashed down a fence with bolt cutters to create a crafty shortcut for thugs.

The cut-through is putting residents in danger, with “several near misses” with bikes and scooters zooming in and out.

Councillor Sean Dillow, for Kempshott and Buckskin in Basingstoke, is demanding for the “blatant vandalism” to be resolved.

“I’ll be calling on the local authorities to replace the fencing to close this unofficial cut through,” he told Basingstoke Gazette.

“There needs to be a review of the situation and discussions on any potential long-term solutions to ensure that anyone causing further vandalism to the fencing is identified.”

The fence will be rebuilt to last, according to a spokesperson for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

They added: “The council installed fencing in Highlands Road to block this cut-through.

“Unfortunately, this was vandalised which has been temporarily repaired and reinforced in advance of a heavier-duty solution being installed on Monday.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council said the land between the affected roads are “not part of the public highway” it is “not responsible for its repair.”

The Sun has approached Cllr Dillow and Hampshire County Council for comment.
