BRITAIN’S first register for nannies and maternity nurses has been launched — in a victory for the Sun on Sunday.

We demanded action after a judge took the highly unusual step of identifying Emily Waters who inflicted 20 injuries on twins.

Self-employed nanny Waters, who advertised online, caused a broken leg, cracked ribs and a fractured skull during a 12-day stint with the family.

Family Court Judge Judith Rowe KC, who exonerated the parents, said Waters, of St Ives, Cambs, should be named because her role was “wholly unregulated by any professional body”.

The voluntary National Nanny Register will now offer parents safeguards.

The National Nanny Association UK said it hoped its register would prevent a repeat of the case.

Co-founder Maria Culley said: “Hiring a nanny can feel overwhelming but the register connects families with trustworthy professionals.

“In all other sectors of the childcare and education industry strict and robust safeguarding protocols must be adhered to.

“Why should the nanny industry be exempt?”

Co-founder Allie Bell said: “The National Nanny Register is an ultimate milestone in raising standards.”
