Tributes have poured in for Hatton since with his beloved Manchester City holding a minute’s applause for him ahead of their win over rivals United.

Fans in Manchester are now taking the opportunity to honour their local boy by signing a public book of condolence.

One former schoolmate of Hatton described him as “always a joker and willing to have a quick chat”.

The ex-classmate, Jamie Pulford, highlighted a gesture the boxer made that left a lasting impression on her mum.

She told the BBC: “He even took the time out one day to ring my nan to surprise her, so she could say that Ricky Hatton had rang her.

“My mum always loved him for that.

“He was special lad, always humble and stayed true to his roots, true to his people.

“He always, always had time for anybody who wanted to stop him for an autograph or a photograph and you don’t get many that’ll do that.”

City star Phil Foden paid a personal tribute to Hatton as he visited his family.

He gifted his matchworn Manchester derby shirt and a bouquet of flowers, and left a message which read: “There is only 1 Ricky Hatton. Rest in peace, Phil.”
