SAS Who Dares Wins star Jason Fox has urged fellow veterans to enrol in medical ecstasy trials to find a cure for post-traumatic stress disorder.

He spoke out as psychoactive drug methylone was hailed in the US as a breakthrough therapy.

Now, researchers here want 1,000 military volunteers to test the drug.

Foxy, 47, formerly a sergeant in the Special Boat Service, said such treatment might have cured the PTSD that cut short his fighting career and led him to contemplate suicide.

He said: “If it had been available when I was diagnosed, I would have been open to trying it.

“I would urge veterans to volunteer for this trial.

“If it helps people to live a better life, then it is 100 per cent worth it.”

Two thirds of patients in a US trial were, in effect, cured of symptoms including flashbacks, nightmares and rages.

Dr Iain Jordan, at drug tester Clerkenwell Health, said small UK trials were promising.

He added: “It’s the most exciting thing that’s happened in psychology and psychiatry in my 22 years.”
