It’s back to the big time for Tottenham, who return to the Champions League 923 days after their last appearance in Europe’s elite competition.

That night in 2023, Spurs’ campaign ended in disappointment as they failed to overturn a first-leg deficit against AC Milan in the last 16 – crashing out without scoring in either leg.

This time around, there will be no Harry Kane or Son Heung-min, the duo responsible for a combined 42% of Tottenham’s Champions League goals since the competition’s rebrand in 1992–93.

But what Spurs do have is a giant wave of renewed optimism, with new manager Thomas Frank enjoying a brilliant start to life in north London.

Frank has led Spurs to three wins in their opening four Premier League matches, with the team scoring eight goals and keeping three clean sheets – as many as they managed in their previous 26 league games combined.

It’s an impressive turnaround, and with Frank set to make his Champions League managerial debut, fans are hoping for a clean slate on the European stage.

Tottenham have only won the opening game of a European Cup or Champions League campaign twice in seven attempts. They’ve also won just one of their last 13 matches against Spanish opposition in major European competition.

But perhaps that won’t be a problem against Villarreal.

The Spanish side have played 14 Champions League matches against English opposition – and are still searching for their first win (D6, L8), having lost each of the last seven in a row.

They also come into this clash on the back of a two-game winless run, having been held by Celta Vigo before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in their most recent outing.

Yes, Tottenham have looked solid defensively on paper, with three clean sheets and just one goal conceded in their opening four Premier League games.

But the stats tells a slightly different story.

Only West Ham and Nottingham Forest have allowed more shots on target, and no team in the league has outperformed their expected goals conceded more than Spurs (-3.67 xGC).

It’s a similar story going forward. Spurs have outscored their expected goals by +3.09, the highest overperformance in the division, suggesting they may be riding their luck at both ends.

We’re tipping a resilient Villarreal to arrive in north London looking to grind out a result, and with Tottenham’s poor record against Spanish opposition, a score draw looks a solid shout.
