Pro golfer Knapp, ranked No80 in the world, called Makena’s passing a “tough reality to comprehend”.
The pair had been dating for two years.
Their relationship was revealed when Knapp won his first PGA Tour title aged 29 in February 2024.
With the California-native going well at the Mexico Open, Makena jetted down from Canada to support her man.
The NBC broadcast of the event revealed to viewers that the pair were a couple, and that they had been dating for around six months at the time.
To this point, the duo had not yet featured on each other’s social media accounts, with their relationship kept low profile.
The following month, when Knapp finally appeared on Makena’s Instagram page, she poked fun at their relationship having been revealed by a TV giant.
Alongside a picture of the pair beaming together, she wrote, “Does it still count as a hard launch if NBC saw it first?”
Makena went on to be by Knapp’s side as he fulfilled his dreams by competing on the PGA Tour.
She sent a heartfelt message to her boyfriend on social media just six weeks before her tragic death.
The message, which was her final post on Instagram, read: “Year 2 of first fairway hugs & watching you live out your dreams.
“Second season in the books — forever grateful to be on this walk with you, here’s to many many many more!
“I looooove you sweet boy, you make it so dang easy to be proud.”
Makena’s death earlier this week was revealed by a friend posting on her Instagram account on Friday.
‘A TOUGH REALITY TO COMPREHEND’
Following the horrific news, Knapp paid tribute to Makena.
The golf star told the Mail, “Makena was such a thoughtful person whose selflessness toward others is something I will always appreciate.
“We shared so many unforgettable memories together and now that she’s no longer with us, it’s a tough reality to comprehend.
“She had an incredible family, great friends, and her fun, outgoing energy will be missed by all of us.
“It’s an understatement to say how hard all of this is to process for everyone who knew Mak, especially her family and friends, who deserve privacy and respect during this difficult time.”
While Makena’s cause of death was not revealed, the statement posted to her Instagram account appealed for donations to the Bruyère Brain Health & Memory Clinic or the Griffin Bell Endowment Fund.
