TRENDY bakery Gail’s has left a sour(dough) taste at one of its UK sites after a dismal food hygiene inspection.

A site has been hit by a one-star rating by the Food Standards Agency – making it the ‘most unhygienic’ Gail’s in the UK.

Famous for its upmarket pastries and cakes across the country, it boasts eateries in London, Bristol and Liverpool.

The posh bakery has received a dire single rating less than 12 months after opening.

The bakery in question has been revealed as Birmingham‘s New Street.

Last month, Gail’s was awarded a score of 1 – meaning ‘major improvement’ is necessary from food hygiene inspectors.

Each premises must be set up with the right layout, ventilation, hand-washing stations and pest control to meet food hygiene standards.

Inspectors are thought to have found that the Birmingham branch could not demonstrate routine checks to guarantee the food served was safe.

Nor could it provide proof that staff were properly trained in food safety.

A Gail’s spokesperson told The Sun: “Gail’s takes food hygiene very seriously, reflected in above average ratings across all our bakeries.

“We have fully investigated this isolated incident which has now been resolved and are confident the issue is under control and poses no risk to our customers or products.

“We are currently awaiting a secondary visit from Environmental Health in order to restore the five-star rating previously awarded.”

The swanky store, which is popular with celebs and influencers, boasts around 130 UK outlets.

The Birmingham site is one of three in the country failing in hygiene.

Earlier this year, Cambridgeshire and London were awarded scores of 2 , meaning improvement is necessary.

In March, the chain was accused of ‘shameful food waste’ by dumping bin loads of expensive sarnies every day.

The bakery does not use food fridges, so shops have to throw out any unsold stock every few hours — despite claiming it has nearly zero food waste.

Instead, it keeps sandwiches and sweet treats behind a pane of glass on sleek countertops at room temperature.

Food safety concerns and the company’s “fresh” mantra mean that items such as pastrami, parmesan chicken and salami buns end up in the bin.

Company bosses are said to not believe in fridges because they “make food taste worse”.

Gail’s does, however, give leftover bread, refrigerated salads, yoghurt and pastries to homeless shelters.
