Why is the Uefa Super Cup being held in a 25,000 stadium?
This year’s Uefa Super Cup will be held at Udinese’s 25,000-seater stadium, Stadio Friuli.
It will come as a surprise to many fans that the clash isn’t held at one of Europe’s elite venues with a much bigger capacity.
From 1998 to 2012, the Super Cup was hosted by Monaco, but it has since been played in 13 different locations.
The venue for the European clash is now decided by individual football associations bidding to host major Uefa matches, before the executive committee selects their host of choice.
Spurs have become accustomed to playing in front of 60,000-plus at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium every other week, so it will be a bit of a shock for them on Wednesday night.
As it will for PSG, who have a near 50,000 seater home in the Parc des Princes and recently played in the Club World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium, which had an attendance of 81,000.
Spurs have played at the Stadio Friuli once before, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Udinese in the 2008 UEFA Cup.
While the Parisians will play at the ground for the first time on Wednesday night.
